These days in the U.S., it’s hard to separate out delivery of healthcare services from the business of healthcare. Activities related to running clinical care business include administrative oversight, logistics, regulatory compliance, medical service coding and insurance billing, as well as coordination of the supporting services for information technology, human resources, facilities, and corporate liaisons. Equally important are the factors related to the language of business—accounting—and how they guide the process of strategic implementation, budgeting and monitoring fiscal stability.
Undergraduate and graduate placements, as well as work study arrangements, may provide practical experience for those individuals interested in the business of healthcare and developmental disabilities. Bachelor’s-level students interested in practicum should consult the undergraduate practicum application page. Graduate students in business administration, finance, human factors or operations analysis should contact the training office to explore current training options.
