Our team of psychiatrists and developmental nurse practitioners offers services including medical follow-up and medication management to children with an existing diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Developmental Nurse Practitioners

The developmental specialist team of nurse practitioners performs comprehensive medical assessments of children and adolescents who already have confirmed diagnoses of autism. The medical assessment may include a physical examination, ordering baseline labs (metabolic and genetic), an electrocardiogram, and referring to other Marcus programs or other medical specialists as indicated.

The nurse practitioners provide ongoing follow-up care to monitor developmental progress and to help address the various needs of children with autism, including behavioral, educational, feeding and sleep difficulties. The nurse practitioner team also prescribes medications when necessary to treat behavioral and mood symptoms associated with autism.

Psychiatry

The psychiatry services department provides comprehensive medication consultation and ongoing management of medication for control of behavior and mood symptoms related to autism or other comorbid psychiatric diagnosis for children and adolescents already diagnosed with autism.

The psychiatry team provides a continuum of services, including prescribing medicines, ordering baseline labs (metabolic and genetic), electrocardiograms and making referrals to other medical specialists as needed. Our psychiatrists work closely and in collaboration with other programs at Marcus Autism Center so children and families have access to the right resources.

The most common comorbid psychiatry concerns we diagnose and treat are:

  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Mood disorders
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Sleep disorders
  • Genetic disorders
