Volunteer Descriptions

Below are descriptions of some of the opportunities that may be offered through this program. Please be aware that not all of these positions will be available at all times.

 

Behavior Data Specialist Intern 

Program: Pediatric Feeding Disorders Program or Language and Learning Clinic
Schedule: Monday through Friday, between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., various sessions throughout day.
*Must be at least 18 years of age.
Commitment required: A 16-hour training program during two to three days; minimum 30 hours during the term.
Description:
Volunteer would participate in client’s treatment sessions in the treatment program. He/she would be expected to observe treatment sessions and collect data about client’s and therapists’ behaviors using a computer data collection program. Volunteer would assist therapists with pre- and post-session preparation. This position would also include assisting with research projects and other administrative tasks as assigned by supervisor.
Minimum education required: Intern must be enrolled in a psychology degree program at an accredited university and have completed one year of undergraduate study. Students in other programs of study may apply and be eligible at the discretion of the department.

Special Education Intern 

Program: Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Clinic
Schedule: Monday through Friday, between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.
*Must be at least 18 years of age.
Commitment Required: A six-week commitment for three hours a day, two days per week, preferably Mondays and Thursdays.
Description: Intern will assist with organizing the pre- and post-information from the Saturday Tutoring Program, assist with lesson planning and gathering materials for summer tutoring, and help organize the educational files. Students would be able to gain experience tutoring if interested.
Minimum Education Required: Must be enrolled in an education or special education degree program at an accredited university and have completed one year of undergraduate study. Students in other programs of study may apply and be eligible at the discretion of the department.

Respite Day Care Provider  

Program: Pediatric Feeding Disorders program
Schedule: Monday through Friday, 12 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Commitment Required: No hour commitment is required, but request regular availability is requested. Volunteers must make a six-week commitment during the summer volunteer program.
Description: Volunteers would provide day-care for children currently participating in the Pediatrics Feeding Disorders program during the midday breaks in treatment. Children are often napping during this time or participating in activities in the Parent Lounge. This position is designed to allow parents to take a break and run errands.

Resource Center Assistant 

Program: Norman Shutters Resource Center
Schedule: Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Commitment Required: No hour commitment is required, but request regular availability is requested during the summer volunteer program for at least six weeks. Volunteers can work a half day or full day shift.
Description: Volunteers would provide staffing for the Resource Cente--assisting users (primarily parents), staffing the reception desk and assisting the Resource Center director with special projects as requested. The Resource Center develops community outreach programs as well as onsite resources for parents, staff and the larger community.

Early Intervention Classroom Assistant 

Program: Early Intervention
Schedule: Monday through Friday, 9 to 11:30 a.m., or 1 to 3 p.m.
*Must be at least 18 years of age.
Commitment Required: A minimum of one two-hour shift per week during the summer term, or availability on an as-needed (substitute) basis; two-hour training session required prior to volunteering. The program director interviews and selects volunteers for this program.
Description: Volunteers would assist teachers on an as-needed basis with activates in the Early Intervention classrooms. The Early Intervention Classroom serves children from 18 months to 7 years of age with a diagnosis of autism and related disorders.
