Encephalitis

Encephalitis is an inflammation of the brain. Most types are caused by a viral infection. Symptoms include fever, headache, vomiting, stiffneck and back, confusion, drowsiness, clumsiness, unsteady gait, irritability, abnormal sensitivity to light and seizures.

Treatment may include antiviral medications, anticonvulsants to prevent or treat seizures. Corticosteroids may be used to reduce brain swelling or inflammation. Medications such as Tylenol may be used to treat the headaches and fever.

In severe cases of encephalitis difficulty with walking and movement of extremities as well as confusion may persist and rehabilitation services, both on an inpatient as well as outpatient basis, will be needed to help maximize and restore function.
