Description of Program
Early assessment and diagnosis of developmental and neurological disorders is essential. The receipt of early intervention is instrumental in maximizing potential and minimizing or circumventing learning and behavior problems in later years.
The Marcus Early Intervention Program serves children ages 18 months - 7 years. These children often have disorders such as autism, mental retardation, feeding or behavior disorders and neurological disorders.
In early intervention, young children are taught skills that are needed to participate in inclusive school settings. In addition to working with the children, parents and teachers are trained to implement successful intervention methods at home and at school.
The cornerstone of the Early Intervention Program is incorporating assessment with intervention. Comprehensive evaluations are completed in order to determine each child's developmental level of behavior, language, learning acquisition and social skills.
Assessments are essential in identifying the areas for intervention so that treatment plans are centered on the successful transition from early childhood programs to more inclusive community programs.
Each child’s program is individually designed utilizing the model of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Interventions are designed to offer one-on-one behavioral therapy to reduce aberrant behavior and develop functional social skills; individual intervention to develop cognitive skills in a therapeutic milieu; and training of parents and other caregivers to prepare for the child’s transition to inclusive community programs.
The outcome goals of the Marcus Early Intervention Program are: To achieve a major reduction in aberrant behavior; to increase a child’s focus and attention to the activities and tasks at hand; and to improve language and other basic skills. Additionally, children learn to apply skills developed in the program to other settings.
Early intervention involves parents, and community agencies working collaboratively to provide the appropriate course of intervention for the child.
The School accepts students with developmental disabilities, autism, mental retardation, traumatic brain injury and other neurological and behavior disorders.
