Biographical Sketch
Dr. Roy Sanders is the Medical Director of the Pediatric Neurodevelopmental Center and Psychiatric Services at the Marcus Autism Center in Atlanta, Georgia. He currently serves as Associate Medical Director of the center and is also an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Emory University School of Medicine.
After training, Dr. Sanders continued on faculty with Vanderbilt University working with developmentally disabled children and adults, as well as several other specialty populations. Additionally, he taught at the medical school specializing in subjects related to sexuality in disabled and chronically ill persons. He was involved in teaching emergency psychiatric care to interns and residents, and he was the director of the Schizophrenia Clinic at Vanderbilt.
In 1993, Dr. Sanders became the medical director for the Mental Health Cooperative in Nashville. Over six years he was instrumental in leading the effort to create a comprehensive system of care for chronically mentally ill adults and children that included outpatient, in-patient, and mobile crisis care for the city. He continued as adjunct faculty at Vanderbilt and was involved in research and teaching at Vanderbilt as well as Meharry Medical School, East Tennessee College of Medicine, and the University of Tennessee School of Social Work.
In 1999 Dr Sanders and his family moved to Cooperstown New York where he continued to work with children and adults with developmental disabilities through the Upstate Home for Children and Adults, Pathfinder Village for people living with Down Syndrome, and the Herkimer County Board of Cooperative Educational Services. He also ran a child psychiatric clinic at Bassett Healthcare, a comprehensive healthcare facility affiliated with Columbia University Medical School. He continued to lecture and teach colleagues, medical students and residents from Columbia as well as the New England School of Osteopathic Medicine.
In 2002, Dr. Sanders accepted a position with the DeKalb County Community Service Board in Georgia to help develop a comprehensive system of care for the children of DeKalb County. In this process, he has been affiliated with the juvenile court system and the foster care system in DeKalb County. He was subsequently asked to join the faculty of the Marcuus Autism Center and has been working to develop comprehensive psychiatric services for children and adults with developmental disabilities.
Dr. Sanders is devoted to developing a comprehensive and humane system of care for children and adults with developmental disabilities. He is active in several community organizations aimed at making full inclusion a reality in our community. He is also the father of a son with Pervasive Developmental Disorder and Mental Retardation.
