Resources for Finding Quality Healthcare
For Your Child

Finding quality childcare can be a challenge for families of children with special needs, and families often have many valid concerns about who will look after their child. Below are some resources and guidelines to assist families in this process; however, it is important to note that it is ultimately the family’s decision as to who is hired. It is the family’s responsibility to be cautious and reasonable when hiring childcare. One imperative step in this process is reference checking. Families are encouraged to check multiple references carefully, and if there is any significant hesitation, do not hire that provider.

Also, families are encouraged to have childcare providers participate in a paid trial run before committing to future services. To ensure that the childcare provider is a good fit, have him/her spend two or three days in the usual routine with you and your family. This trial run allows for you to observe how the childcare provider interacts with your child, sets limits, handles stressful situations, etc. This trial run also enables the provider to get a strong sense of what will be expected of him/her on a day-to-day basis.

In addition to providing childcare at home, many providers are more than happy to accompany families on vacations. The provider’s responsibilities will continue, but a free trip to Disney World is still a free trip to Disney World. If this is important to you and your family, inquire about the provider’s availability for such services in the future.

Advertise in Newspapers: college newspapers are great resources for advertising your childcare needs

How to advertise in newspapers:

  1. Take time to write down your childcare needs. Include number of children and their ages. Also, indicate where you and your family reside. Atlanta is a large area, so you may want to be more specific.
  2. Focus less on the specific requirements you have for a childcare provider. If you seek a 20-year-old female who is a non-smoker and not allergic to cats and dogs, your response will be much more limited than if you seek a provider with reliable transportation. Getting a number of responses will allow you to “weed out” those providers who do not meet your childcare needs.
  3. Mail or email your paragraph (approximately 50-100 words) to local newspapers. Information is provided below.
