International Adoption Center for Health and Development

Director

Amy Thornhill Pakula, MD

Program Description

Adopting a child is not only an act of love. It is an act of courage.

Prospective parents enter the international adoption process with the opportunity to change a life and create a family. However, adopting children from other countries may present a complex series of challenges.

The International Adoption Center for Health and Development at the Marcus Autism Center provides a wide variety of services to persons who may have or may be considering adopting children from foreign countries.

Removed from a world completely different from American life, a child may not instantly adapt to his or her new surroundings. Similarly, the adopting family may not be ready for the medical or emotional demands such a child could present.

Adopting parents need as much information as possible to make the most informed decisions, and adoption agencies may not be able to provide a complete and accurate assessment of a child. Our developmental and medical experts offer professional comprehensive reviews and evaluations of this information. This invaluable service provides families and their physicians with information about the child’s health and developmental abilities. Discussion with experts in child development and international health allows families to improve their understanding of the potential needs of the child and have their questions answered.

The International Adoption Center provides services such as: Evaluations of medical records and/or video tapes; consultations with prospective parents prior to travel; comprehensive medical, neurodevelopmental and behavioral assessments; developmental and behavioral follow-up care and management; and Psycho-Educational evaluations.

Adopting a child is a rewarding commitment for any family. The International Adoption Center provides support to those parents who wish to give a child love, care and above all, hope.
